Our class did this mini-project to learn and demonstrate our understanding of street law. We spent the last week learning about our rights on the streets, in our homes, and in cars. We then chose a specific scenario that we wanted to do our project on. I worked with Conor and Miles to make a video demonstrating your rights when police use brutal force against you. We showed a cop pull over a car of people and unjustly force them to exit the car. He then proceeds to beat the drive and threatens to do the same to the passengers if they do not comply. The Passengers then proceed to fight back against the officer and release the drive and flee the area.
I learned about the rights we have to defend ourselves against police brutality. It was interesting to learn that people can fight back even if it leads to the police officers death. I thought that it was very interesting how these laws are not well known to the general public. in many videos and examples that i saw about police brutality the victims are afraid to defend themselves because they do not know that they can. If I were to go further into this project and explore other aspects I would look into the rights we have as students. I think its really interesting how our rights change because we are in a considered safety zone. I also think its interesting how situations outside of school like social media can also be brought to the schools attention and allows them to do be able to punish the students. |
For this project we focused our attention on the 1st amendment, the freedom of speech. we had been studying the consitution prior but now we just focused on one part of it. we spent a week dissecting each part of the 1st amendment and understanding what it really meant. after we had a good understanding of what it said in the 1st amendment we then picked a type of free speech that we were interested in. We studied our piece and met with groups to discuss them together. We wrote and essay about freedom of speech and created a visual piece along with it
Free speech
Although the use of freedom of speech like this cartoon can often be mean and degrading towards certain politicians, If the citizens of of the US don't get to say what they want our government can become or tyrannical without us being able to stop it.
We need to be able to say what we want about our leaders. Our country is unique in this way because we are protected by the constitution to say what we want about our leaders. Allowing a government to be able to censor what we say about them is dangerous and could lead to the downfall of the government. Even if the language is false or hateful, in a way it is helping us all rethink our views on our leaders. This also keeps our leaders in check, if we can saw what we want about them they will avoid doing things that the public would look down on. There are some terrible and hateful speech in our country, it is written, drawn, and spoken. However that same speech is what allows us to say our own opinions
Political cartoons like this one here, are what keep our freedom of speech alive. When you don't practice something for a while then you loose the ability to do it. This same concept goes for our rights. If they aren't used and practiced we will loose them. I think its really important that we do exercise them often because I think they important to having a strong nation. It might seem wrong to be able to compare Obama to someone as evil as Hitler, but it is good that we are able to be able to say what we want. I think its better to say and show cruel things then not anything at all. My uncle was running for governor of Colorado in 2010, it was a brutal political race with both sides tearing each other apart. After the election my Uncle was so hurt by the things that where said about him that he left politics. Even though it may really anger some people, we need to have that freedom to prevent our government from being corrupt, and believe it or not even if its hateful things like this it keeps our leaders in line.
Our country was founded on the idea of freedom of Speech. The founding fathers wanted a country where they didn't have to be afraid of what they say. The United States of America would be tremendously different if we didn't have this right of free speech. Our government would be more tyrannical and powerful to an extreme level which was what our founding fathers were braking away from when they started.
Freedom of speech was what our country was founded on. All of our other rights are possible because of the freedom of speech, for example if we didn't have free speech we wouldn't have freedom of the press either. Even when we see or hear of someone else using there rights to express something that offends you, it keeps our rights available.
This is our first amendment rights video. we spent a week outside of the class room working on making a video about the first amendment. We recreated an old 1970's educational video about our rights. little Timmie goes on an adventure to find out about his rights granted to him by the 1st amendment.
